"You are only as young as your spine is flexible"

On the Day of Your Procedure

1. It is important to remember this:
"Do not to eat (including chewing gum) or drink (including carbonated drinks, juice, squash or milk) for 6 hours before your surgery".
You may be able to drink only clear fluids like water, black tea, black coffee till 2 hours before your planned procedure.

If you do eat or drink during this time period, the anaesthetist may cancel your planned surgery. No exceptions to this rule.

2. If you take medication on a regular basis, ask you doctor (GP) whether or not it is advised for you to take it on the day of your surgery. If you do, take it with only small amount of water (1 or 2 sips of clear water) to swallow the medicines.

3. If you typically wear contact lenses, please wear your glasses instead on the day of the surgery.

4. You should have already discussed about the surgery. However, if you still have any questions or unclear about any points. Please make sure that you notify a member of our team so these points can be addressed.

5. At the hospital on the day of surgery, you will be prepared for surgery. It is during this time that you will meet with the anaesthetist. He/she will discuss with you the options of anaesthesia and help you decide which type will be best for you.

7. After surgery you will be taken to the recovery area. You will be in this area for approximately 1-2 hours as your anaesthesia and vital signs are monitored.
In normal circumstances, family members are not permitted in the recovery room. Why? We need to keep dignity for all of our patients. This clearly include your own dignity.

8. If you are not spending the night in the hospital, you will be discharged after sorting your paperwork and medications. You must arrange for someone to pick you up and take you home from the hospital.
It is important that you have someone to stay with you that night!
